It can be much less expensive being green

New Study: Costs & benefits of Texas’ green buildings

August 31, 2007

Momentum Bay’s researchers are working with the green teams of Texas’ many green buildings, including ENERGY STAR® labeled buildings & LEED® Certified projects, to articulate the business case for green building in Texas by quantifying the costs & benefits of Texas’ high performance green buildings.

Over the coming months, we will collect data from Texas’ ENERGY STAR labeled buidings & LEED Certified projects. Building data encompasses first cost, life cycle cost, effectiveness, efficiency, performance & post-occupancy impacts, e.g., productivity, health, property value, operations & maintenance costs, insurance costs, etc. We will also gather information about how these LEED projects have yielded triple bottom line benefits to their green teams’ businesses. We will compare these data to the costs & benefits of conventional developments, & articulate how green buildings help Texas in terms of health impacts, changes in property value, energy and water use impacts, transportation patterns, occupancy rates, & public infrastructure costs. The study will offer a simple yet comprehensive, Texas-specific tool for all green teams working on Texas projects.
